No Added-Sugar Banana Bread: Try This Healthier Version of a Favorite Recipe

Banana bread is a versatile treat that works well for breakfast, snacks, or even dessert. However, many traditional recipes come loaded with added sugars, butter, and oils. Fortunately, you can still enjoy this healthier twist on a classic with my no added-sugar banana bread recipe.

In this recipe, I’ll walk you through the steps to create a deliciously moist banana bread that gets its sweetness from ripe bananas and applesauce. I used a rolled oat-based cereal called muesli found in the oatmeal/cereal aisle in this recipe (it contains rolled oats, dried fruit, nuts, and flax seed). You can also use quick oats instead. This recipe is perfect for anyone eager to adopt healthier eating habits or enjoy a favorite comfort recipe with a healthy twist.

Ingredients

Prepare to bake by gathering these essential ingredients (for one loaf):

  • 2 ripe bananas

  • 3/4 cup (155g) unsweetened applesauce

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup (175g) whole wheat flour

  • 1/2 cup (50g) muesli* or quick oats

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparation Steps

  1. Preheat the Oven

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Prepare your 9"x 5" loaf pan by either lining it with parchment paper or using cooking spray.

  1. Prepare the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until they are smooth. The more ripe the bananas are, the sweeter your bread will be! It’s best to use bananas with brown spots for maximum sweetness.

Next, mix in the unsweetened applesauce, egg, and vanilla extract. Whisk these wet ingredients until fully combined. This mix gives you a naturally sweet base without any added sugars.

  1. Mixing the Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, muesli (or quick oats), baking soda, and salt. Stir together these dry ingredients well to ensure everything is evenly mixed.

  1. Combining the Ingredients

Now it’s time to combine your wet and dry mixtures. Pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet ones, gently folding them together until just combined. Avoid over-mixing, as this can make your banana bread tough.

  1. Baking Your Banana Bread

Pour your banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan. Spread the mixture evenly across the pan.

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Baking times can vary by oven, so keep an eye on your bread to avoid over-baking. If the top of your banana bread is getting dark quickly, tent a piece of aluminum foil over the top of the pan as it bakes. Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Banana Bread

  • Use Overripe Bananas: The riper the bananas, the sweeter the bread will be. Bananas should have plenty of brown spots for the best flavor profile.

  • Store Properly: You can store the banana bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. You can also freeze slices to enjoy later!

  • Experiment with Add-Ins: Don't hesitate to get creative with your banana bread! Consider adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for a flavor twist, or try adding nuts to the mixture.
